School Aycliffe

The Village

Location

School Aycliffe is a community of some 500 homes, which includes the older, original village, The Chestnuts and The Oaklands estates. The village straddles School Aycliffe Lane, a short distance to the west of Newton Aycliffe and to the east of Heighington. The name derives from a Viking called Scula who owned land in this part of South Durham. Behind the village is School Aycliffe Wetlands, a wildlife habitat adjoining the Oakleaf golf course.

School Aycliffe Community Centre is located at the bottom of Eastfields, School Aycliffe, Co Durham, DL5 6QH and is clearly signposted. It was built in the mid-1980s by the Council for use by the local Community and is managed by a group of volunteers – the School Aycliffe Community Association (SACA). Being a registered Charity receives no income other than that raised by events and activities held in the Centre.

The Centre caters for all aspects of the local community, including children and young people, the elderly, people with disabilities and the general public by providing facilities, open space and other services. There is a 24 hour access Defibrillator fitted to the exterior of the Community Centre for the benefit, in the hour of need, to local residents.

School Aycliffe Community Association’s aims are to further benefit the residents of School Aycliffe and the neighbourhood, without distinction or discrimination, by associating together the said residents and the local Authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation, with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.
